Botlab was founded on a simple idea: technology creates greater opportunity when people have the skills, knowledge and networks to participate in it.
Since 2018, we have brought together technology professionals, industry partners, educators and communities to make emerging and foundational technologies more accessible. Our work has spanned Internet infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, data protection, cloud technologies, digital skills and technology career development.
As technology evolves, so does Botlab. Today, we are building on this foundation to prepare Africa’s workforce for an AI-enabled future while strengthening capacity in AI governance, cybersecurity and Internet infrastructure.

How our work has evolved
Internet infrastructure and networking
Networking is part of Botlab’s foundation.
Our early work focused on building practical technical capacity in computer networks, Internet technologies and network operations. We developed and delivered learning initiatives designed to make technical knowledge accessible to both emerging professionals and underserved communities.
This work established a foundation that continues to shape our interest in Internet infrastructure, connectivity, peering and the technical talent required to sustain Africa’s growing digital economy.
Cybersecurity and digital resilience
As more people and organizations moved online, our work expanded into cybersecurity.
Botlab convened cybersecurity practitioners and technology companies to help participants understand evolving threats, security practices and the importance of protecting digital systems.
Our programs have connected learners with expertise from across the technology ecosystem, bringing practical industry perspectives into cybersecurity education and awareness.
Data protection and privacy
Before today’s conversations about AI governance, Botlab was already working at the intersection of technology, data and responsibility.
Our data protection programming explored privacy, responsible data practices, GDPR and the changing obligations created by an increasingly data-driven economy.
That experience now provides an important foundation for our work in AI governance, where questions of privacy, accountability, transparency and responsible use of technology have become even more important.
Cloud, data and emerging technology
Botlab has continually evolved its programming alongside changes in technology.
Our training and learning initiatives have introduced participants to areas including cloud technologies, big data, digital platforms and other emerging technologies, while creating opportunities for learners to engage directly with practitioners working in the field.
This approach remains central to Botlab today: helping people understand not only how technology works, but where it is going and what skills will be needed next.
Expanding participation in technology
Inclusion has been an important thread throughout our history.
Through initiatives including Women in Data Nairobi, and partnerships and programs focused on women and underserved communities, we have worked to broaden participation in technology and create opportunities for people who have historically had less access to technical learning, professional networks and industry opportunities.
Rather than treating inclusion as a standalone program, we continue to embed it across our work.

Botlab’s work has been strengthened through collaborations and programs involving organizations across the technology, development and education ecosystems, including Internet Society, Google, Cisco, Oracle, Safaricom, Palo Alto Networks, UNESCO, KICTANet and others.

The technology landscape is entering another major transition. Artificial intelligence is changing how people work, the skills employers require and the questions societies must answer about governance, security and accountability. At the same time, cybersecurity and resilient Internet infrastructure remain fundamental to Africa’s digital future.
Botlab’s next chapter builds on what we have learned. Our current focus is on four areas.

As this work develops, Botlab will expand its capacity in Responsible AI and AI Safety, so that African professionals and communities help shape the next generation of technology rather than simply using it.
